Domesticated Cockatrices

Haha, so this has been a silly idea kicking around in my head since I seemed to have caught chicken fever and can't stop watching every possibly info about chickens and back yard chickens that I can get my hands on. I've always wanted chickens since I was small and grew up on a farm with fresh eggs and chicks. Just been a long term "sigh" goal of knowing I'd never live on a farm again for livestock and such then I find ALL ABOUT BACK YARD CHICKEN CULTURE AND MY MIND IS BLOWN!

Obviously as much as I love it, I would devote myself way too hard and hurt myself/my health trying to care for chickens. So I can't personally own chickens at this time. However this is now given me some more long term goals. Depending where we move and in that first year or two.. I want to see if I can go an entire year without 1 single flare up. And if I can and safely juggle my work and daily functions I then will review getting chickens since I then believe I would be physically capable. Of course if we have a house / right area / yaddaya. All the boring stuff.

SIGHS DREAMILY~ So in the mean time I've been thinking all about fantasy chickens. I know there are ducks, geese, and peacocks. But I wanted specifically chicken related work and fantastical designs? So in my head I was just playing with some concepts and the one that stuck out to me was the Domesticated Cockatrice. A common everyday livestock creature in the Country of Clo. They are hardy, fend off predators, lively pets, lay eggs, and make for much more fuller meats since there is so much more body to them. Their tails are actually a common delicacy anyone can enjoy in Clo.

So I just have some mock ups of what maybe a domesticated coackatrice might look like. Pretty much just lil imps/halfings of dragons and chickrens. Maybe almost griffin like in a way. I'm also playing with the idea of there being two body types, one is the standard cockatrice and the other is a serpent class. They would need their own reasoning as to why they exist apart though. More ideas too was with the wings, I believe I for sure want these two different variations of one with full features and the others just feather topped over the membrane wings. I also need to practice drawing chicken feet as a whole and figure out if I want to practice raptor claws or dinosaur like feet or stay pure and true to spindly chicken legs. Just gotta draw it out and feel it from there.

I lastly did some very fast base redraws/recolors to try out some popular (I think?) chicken breeds like the Leghorn, Sussex, Barred, and Rhode Red I think. Just loved being able to play with the real live creatures first before I go all crazy with the colors and feathers!
